As we say hello to another (foodie) year, we at Lonumedhu take a look back at some notable Maldivian food scene moments – and our own milestones – that stand out from 2022.

Homemade ice cream really took off this year! In addition to the Coconut & Bondi Gelato by Ice.to – with quintessentially Maldivian flavours – local chef Biriyaniu has also introduced homemade ice cream in three unusual, different flavours: Thai milk tea, cinnamon roll, and dark chocolate & miso
Lonumedhu cookbook launched
We also launched our cookbook, ‘Recipes from the Maldives’ this year. The book features 50 traditional Maldivian recipes and is available from Round One Bookshop outlets in the Greater Male’ Region.

Fresh meat to your doorstep
The first fresh meat shop in the Maldives, Island Butcher was opened this year, selling fresh cuts of beef, mutton and chicken. Trust me, you can taste the difference!
First ever Maldivian Master Chef
Chef Maha Naseer was named the first Master Chef from the Maldives, a high honour bestowed by the Master Chef Society of the World.
To find out more about Maha’s journey, read our interview with her.
The Maldives Kitchen opened their doors
The Maldive Kitchen by the team at Home Cooked Maldives was also opened this year, serving authentic Maldivian food. What sets the restaurant apart from other café’s or “hotaas” is their home dining setting (with the types of plates and tableware used in slightly olden times) and “Mireyge Keun” set menu which adds an unusual, course-by-course element to Maldivian food.
Lonumedhu is about eating great food right here in the Maldives.
Our easy to follow recipes use locally available ingredients.
In our blog you will find food news, interviews with chefs and cooks, useful information about eating out and other foodie reads.
