We’ve recently been seeing a lot about the uniquely Maldivian Coconut & Bondi Gelato on our Instagram feed, and we had to try it out! This gelato is a product by the all-new page, Iceto, brought to us by Cidee’s Kitchen (also the proprietors of Blood Orange by CK and Magukolhu Hotaa!).
The Coconut & Bondi Gelato – as the name suggests – is a coconut-flavoured gelato, dotted with pieces of bondi; a sweet, traditional snack made with rice, grated coconut, jasmine water and dhiyaahakuru (Maldivian coconut honey).
Now, for our verdict!
The ice cream was wonderfully sweet, refreshing, and delectable. The coconut flavour was not overpowering at all but veered more towards gabulhi (the slightly mature young coconut) with a meatier, heavier taste. But what made this ice cream truly heavenly were the pieces of homemade bondi. Some pieces were slightly hard while others were softer and more candied with the grated coconut coming through more.
The complimenting textures of the bondi along with the coconut flavour of the ice cream itself made for an entirely coconutty, truly quintessential Maldivian taste – which we definitely recommend trying out!
The Coconut & Bondi Gelato is available from Blood Orange by CK in Male’ and WHIM shops in both Male’ and Hulhumale’.
