The Independence Day long weekend is just around the corner and it’s the perfect time to host a family lunch or have a potluck with your friends. Here, we’ve got 10 Maldivian recipes – some of which are not that well-known – that are easy to make and sure to impress your loved ones!

Mugu baiy is a fragrant rice dish made with yellow lentil, cumin seeds and fried onions. It all comes together in one pot and is great to whip up ahead of time.

This kandu mahu musamma can be a bit time consuming to make as you have to prepare the onion-spice mixture and stuff the tuna slices with it before cooking the curry – but the flavourful, piquant curry is certainly worth it!

This bashi hiki riha is a great vegetable dry curry that goes well with any white rice and fish or chicken dish as a side.

Some time goes into prepping this dish, but the result is a spicy, flavourful rice that can easily feed a large crowd. Pair it with some fihunu kukulhu or other roast chicken dish for a complete meal!

You’ve definitely heard of rihaakuru dhiya and rihaakuru garudhiya, but do you know that we also have a dish called rihaakuru riha?
A lovely mix of havaadhu and rihaakuru, this curry is sure to wow your guests with its piquant taste.

An upgraded version of the classic Maldivian kukulhu riha, this curry makes for a hot and flavoursome dish!

Made with onions, cumin seeds and coconut milk, this is a lovely, mild rice that pairs perfectly with any of the curry dishes mentioned here.

Sweet, sour, and spicy all at once, this curry is sure to be a showstopper on any table. Serve with some white rice or even roshi for a delicious lunch.

Bambukeyo sanneti is not a very well-known dish, but we can assure you that it is absolutely delicious! The starchy breadfruit, coupled with the spice mixture, rihaakuru and coconut milk, gives a beautiful, creamy, and aromatic curry.

While noodles is not a strictly Maldivian dish, this masmirus version has entirely made it into our own thing! Serve it with this green olive salad for an easy addition to your lunch spread.
