Eid sai or breakfast is a time for families and loved ones to gather around after Eid prayers. Most commonly, short eats or hedhika is eaten during this time, with Eid boakibaa taking centre stage – this is a kulhi boakibaa (a type of local fish cake) made especially for Eid!
With this year’s Fitr Eid coming up, here we bring to you a recipe list of both savoury and sweet boakibaa you can make for Eid breakfast, in addition to the special Eid boakibaa.
Savoury
The quintessential boakibaa, this Maldivian version of a fish cake is just oh-so delicious. What makes this dish distinct is the ground rice and grated coconut in it, which is used instead of flour to give it a slightly coarse texture.
Bis boakibaa is like a thick, tuna omelette – really simple to make and even more tasty to eat. You can even make this in the morning right after Eid prayers!
Made with traditional Maldivian rihaakuru (fish paste), this rihaakuru boakibaa is savoury, salty and full of umami taste. Make sure you get some good quality rihaakuru and taste test the mixture before putting it in the oven.
The potato and eggs in this recipe really give this boakibaa a nice, somewhat crispy crust and soft filling inside. It goes great with a cup of black tea!
Sweet
Made with gerikiru or condensed milk, gerikiru boakibaa is like a sweeter, less fluffy butter cake. But, if you prefer a more boakibaa-like, denser texture, just adjust the amount of flour and baking powder.
Paan boakibaa is like the Maldivian version of bread pudding – except all the ingredients are mixed together to make a batter before being baked. The result is an easy-to-make, sweet and delicious dessert, great to have with some tea!
If you want to add a little flair to your paan boakibaa, we also have a great chocolate paan boakibaa recipe.
It’s green, it’s coconutty, it feels special, and it’s really easy to make ahead too! This green coconut milk cake is a classic sweet delicacy in the Maldives and perfect for an occasion such as Eid.
