Tuna Sandwich | Lonumedhu

Tuna Sandwich

Here, we have the most popular type of sandwich among Maldivians, the tuna sandwich. It is made with
a tuna, onion, and mayo filling, then topped off with a slice of cheese. It is very good paired with a cup of
nice, hot black tea!

To make the tuna filling of this recipe, we used Remia Mayonnaise from one of our partners, Sosun
Fihaara. This is a very creamy, fluffy, and light mayonnaise. Remia Mayonnaise works very well to make
different sandwich fillings and salads too.

Makes: 7 sandwiches

Ingredients:
1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
1 red chilli (finely chopped)
1 1⁄4 tsp lime juice
• 1⁄4 tsp salt
1⁄4 ground black pepper
2/3 tsp chilli flakes
1 can tuna (180g)
3 tbsp Remia Mayonnaise
14 slices of white bread
7 slices of cheddar cheese

Instructions:
1. To a mixing bowl, add 1 medium onion (thinly sliced), 1 red chilli (finely chopped), 1 1⁄4 tsp lemon
juice, 1⁄4 tsp salt, 1⁄4 tsp black pepper and 2/3 tsp chilli flakes.
2. Then, start squeezing and squashing the mixture using your fingers, until the onions are soft and
watery-like, creating a reddish juice by the end. This will take around 2-3 minutes.
3. Now, add in the tuna can (180g) into the mix after draining any excess oil/water. Mix the tuna
with the onions and add 3 tbsp Remia Mayonnaise. Give it a final mix to combine everything
together. Divide the tuna filling equally into 7 parts.
4. Spread one portion of the tuna filling on 1 slice of white bread.
5. Place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the tuna filling, followed by another slice of white
bread. Slice off the brown crust of the bread.
6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 to make the rest of the sandwiches.
7. To toast the sandwiches, heat up a pan on medium low heat. Place a sandwich on the pan and
toast for 1-2 minutes or until the cheese slice starts to melt and a light brown crust forms on the
bottom side. Flip and toast for another minute, until lightly browned. Remove from heat and set
aside. Repeat until all the sandwiches are toasted.
8. Before serving, slice the sandwiches diagonally into quarters.
