Raiy Mashuni

 

Raiy mashuni is a really spicy version of the normal mashuni, which consists mainly of onion, tuna, coconut, and aromatic spices and herbs. This is a much-loved Maldivian breakfast dish that is usually served with normal roshi (Maldivian flatbread) or huni roshi (roshi made with grated coconut). It’s especially great to have on a rainy day with some hot black tea.

While our raiy mashuni is pretty spicy, you can always add more or less dried red chillies or chilli flakes to adjust the spiciness to your palate.

 

Serving Size: 4-5

 

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup thinly sliced onion
  • 4 finely chopped curry leaves
  • ¼ finely chopped scotch bonnet (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 4 chopped dried red chillies
  • 1 ½ tsp lime juice
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup grated coconut
  • 1/3 cup thinly sliced smoked tuna
  • ¼ cup tuna can

 

Instructions:

  1. To a bowl, add ½ cup thinly sliced onion, 4 finely chopped curry leaves, ¼ finely chopped scotch bonnet, 1 tsp chili flakes, 1 ½ tsp lime and ½ tsp salt.
  2.  Mix well using your hands (almost like you are kneading dough) while squeezing the onion slices with your fingers until it becomes soft and releases its juices.
  3. Then, add 4 chopped dried red chillies and continue to mix and squeeze more until the juices turn a vibrant red-orange colour.
  4. Add ¼ cup grated coconut and continue squeezing and mixing until well combined.
  5. Lastly, add 1/3 cup thinly sliced smoked tuna and ¼ cup tuna can to the bowl and mix again until everything is evenly combined. Now, your raiy mashuni is ready to eat!
