Lonumirus | Lonumedhu

We’ve been receiving quite a number of Lonumirus recipe requests from you guys lately. So here it is. This is not the most traditional of Lonumirus pastes. Instead of grinding it with the good old ‘dhae’ and ‘foye’, we used an electric grinder. We also used packaged grated coconut instead of fresh ones.  As usual, do feel free to adjust the chilli to your liking.



  • 1 small onion
  • 8 garlic cloves
  • 15 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp whole cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp whole peppercorns
  • 16 dried red chillies (or to taste)
  • ¼ cup grated coconut
  • 1 ½ tsp. lime (or to taste)
  • ½ tsp. salt (or to taste)



  1. Heat a pan, add the grated coconut to it, stir frequently and gently toast the coconut until it takes on a light brown colour. Keep the heat at low to medium throughout the process and when the coconut takes on the light brown colour remove it from the pan and set aside. 
  2. Slice the onion and garlic cloves roughly.
  3. Add the onion, garlic, salt and curry leaves to your grinder and grind until the mixture forms a paste.
  4. Add all the remaining ingredients to the grinder except the lime and grind until the mixture becomes smooth. You can add some water if you think the mixture is too dry. We actually added a teaspoon of water.
  5. Add lime and grind for a couple of seconds and that’s it.
