Kopeefathu Mas Huni

Mas huni is a beloved Maldivian breakfast dish that’s served with Maldivian flatbread roshi. The main ingredients for mas huni are always tuna, coconut, onion, lime and chillis, and various vegetables and leaves are added to make variations of the dish.

Below we have the version of mas huni made with kopee faiy or collard greens.

Serves: 3-4

  • 2 large collard green leaves
  • 1 medium sized onion
  • 1/4 scotch bonnet pepper (or to taste)
  • 3 curry leaves
  • ¾ lime (or to taste)
  • ¼ tsp. salt (or to taste)
  • ½ cup grated coconut
  • 1 tuna can

  1. Wash the leaves and remove and discard the stem and midribs. Slice the leaves thinly.
  2. Slice the onion and scotch bonnet pepper thinly. Mince the curry leaves.
  3. Add the sliced onions and scotch bonnet pepper to a mixing bowl. Squeeze in the lime and add the salt. Then using your fingers squash and squeeze the mixture until the onions soften and release their juices.
  4. Add the grated coconut and mix again using your fingers until everything looks well combined. Then add the tuna and mix again.
  5. Finally add the collard greens and give it a good final mix.
  6. Have a taste and adjust seasoning to your liking before calling it done.
