You may have seen the word pop up on menus and social media lately. Especially lattes, ice-cream or baked goods. But what exactly is hojicha?
Hojicha is a type of Japanese green tea that’s quite different from the usual green teas you might know like matcha or sencha. What makes it special is that the tea leaves are roasted instead of steamed, removing the bitterness of the leaves. This mastering process gives hojicha its unique brown colour and a warm, toasty flavour with hints of caramel and nuts.
Another reason hojicha is becoming so popular is the low caffeine content, which makes it perfect for evenings or for people who want a gentle drink without feeling too alert. It is often enjoyed as a hot tea, iced tea or made into creamy hojicha lattes, which are especially loved for their smooth, roasted flavour.
Hojicha is now being used in many fun ways too like cakes and bakes. Its soft and earthy taste pairs well with milk and sweet treats making it a favourite all around.
If you are new to hojicha, start with a latte or a simple brewed cup. You might just find your new favourite drink!
