Matcha has been popping up all over our feeds lately, and here in Malé, it’s slowly but surely finding its way onto local menus too. But what exactly is it?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where you steep the leaves and toss them out, with matcha you’re actually drinking the entire leaf. This means more flavour, more antioxidants, and a gentle caffeine kick that doesn’t hit you all at once.
While matcha has been a part of Japanese tea culture for centuries, it has recently become a global favourite. It’s the go-to for those looking for a healthier alternative to coffee, and for others, it’s simply about that smooth, earthy taste and the beautiful green colour.
If you’re curious to try matcha or already a fan looking for your next fix, here are some spots around the Greater Male’ Area where you can get your hands on a good cup of matcha (or maybe some other matcha treats too!).
The Usual Coffee House’s matcha drinks are just the right mix of cosy and creative. Whether you’re sipping on their classic matcha latte or going for something like the raspberry matcha, it’s always a treat!

Meraki Coffee Roasters serves a mean matcha! Refreshing and light, it’s the perfect thing to combat the hot, humid afternoons in Male’.
