Not too long ago, ‘kanamadhu cake’ was all the rage in Maldives. Made with kanamadhu or sea almonds, the cake is a modern take of an ingredient that Maldivians have eaten throughout the ages.
While kanamadhu cake is still a go-to for many people, we think it’s fair to say that the hype has died down a little. But that doesn’t mean that we still can’t appreciate a finely made kanamadhu cake for tea!
And that’s exactly how we feel about the delicious kanamadhu cake we tried from Instagram food page, Berryfull.
Berryfull has kanamadhu cakes in all different sizes – from mini to bento to full – along with other sweet treats like chocolate chip cookies, cheesecake and brookies which can be ordered from their page.
We went for their bento-sized kanamadhu cake which came with a pot of kanamadhu sauce on the side. The cake also had more of that kanamadhu sauce (as a glaze) on the top and sides, which was then coated with crushed kanamadhu.
The kanamadhu cake itself was soft and buttery, with a lovely, delicate crumb that melts away as you bite into it. Every now and then you get a tiny piece of kanamadhu in the crumb, which added a toasty nuttiness that just elevated the overall flavour.
The kanamadhu sauce was sweet, caramelly, and really brought the whole cake together. Plus, the sauce on the side meant that you could control how much flavour you wanted. It also added to the moistness of the cake, without making it soggy.
But what we really loved about the cake was how nicely balanced it felt. It was sweet, but not cloyingly so and rich without feeling overly heavy. It was the perfect mixture of nutty, buttery flavours that kanamadhu cake is known and loved for!
So, if you’re a kanamadhu fan, we definitely recommend that you try out this kanamadhu cake from Berryfull. And if you aren’t a believer yet, this might just be the place to start.
