For our Love this Dish article this time, we’re bringing to you the baked goods from the recently opened Palato Bakehouse – Palato Frosty’s newest foray into viennoiseries.
If you’re unfamiliar with the term ‘viennoiseries,’ don’t worry – we’ve got you. Viennoiseries are a type of French baked goods, made by adding butter, sugar and eggs to yeasty dough. This results in richer, sweeter, flaky pastries like croissants, Danish pastries, and brioche bread.
Palato Bakehouse’s goods are available in Palato outlets in Male’ and Hulhumale’. They boast an impressive line-up of viennoiseries, from different flavours of croissants such as chocolate, almond, pistachio, raspberry & vanilla, salted caramel pecan and even chocolate chip cookie dough! They also offer interesting twists to croissants like the classic pain au chocolat, the incredibly beautiful-looking bowtie pastry, the viral cruffin – a mix of croissants and muffins – along with savoury Danish pastries too.
We’ve had the pleasure of trying out some of their delicious treats, and here are our three favourites (in no particular order).
First up, the raspberry & vanilla croissant.
The raspberry & vanilla croissant is certainly a visual treat, with a glossy, golden-brown exterior, woven through with raspberry pink stripes and dehydrated raspberry crumbs on top. When you cut into it, there are dazzling pink pastry layers, filled with vanilla pastry cream and a dollop of raspberry jam in the centre. The croissant layers are light and airy and the sweetness of the vanilla is cut through with the tartness of the raspberry jam and dried crisps on top, giving it a truly irresistible, dual flavour.
Next up, the poached pear Danish pastry – equal parts of visually appealing and deliciousness!
This pastry features glazed, poached pear balls cradled on a bed of vanilla pastry cream with a crisp, flaky base underneath. The pear is soft yet has a pleasant bite to it, and its sweetness and texture perfectly complements that of the creamy vanilla and the buttery pastry. Indulgent yet a bit lighter on the taste buds, this one is great for those who enjoy fruity desserts.
No viennoiserie tasting can be complete without trying an almond croissant. Palato Bakehouse’s version of this quintessential pastry is a burst of subtle almond flavour. With a heap of slivered almonds and a generous dusting of powdered sugar on top, this croissant even looks decadent!
The flakiness of the croissant is superb, giving a satisfying crunch with every bite. The almond filling is creamy and luscious, and the slivered almonds add a pleasant crunch, making each bite a different mix of textures.
Palato Bakehouse goodies are certainly the go-to for anyone craving delicious baked treats. Whether you're a fan of sweet, buttery croissants or savoury pastries, Palato Bakehouse is sure to leave a lasting, delightful impression.
