Sausage Hotdogs

 

Hot dogs are a fun, easy snack. Our recipe here is spicy and saucy with some optional mustard, chilli sauce and green onion topping.

 

Makes: 4

 

Ingredients:

For the filling

  • 5 sausages
  • 1 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ½ inch ginger
  • 2 green chillies
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 small can tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp. chilli sauce
  • ¼ tsp. ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. ground black pepper
  • ¼ tsp. mixed dried herbs

To toast the bun

  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 1 tbsp. butter

For the topping

  • 2 tbsp. mustard
  • 2 tbsp. chilli sauce
  • ½ tbsp. chopped green onion

 

Instructions:

  1. Cut each sausage into 4 long strips and then dice them into small pieces.
  2. Finely chop the onion, garlic, ginger and green chili.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan and add the onion, garlic, ginger and green chili and sauté on medium high heat for 1 minute.
  4. Then add the sausages and sauté for 4 minutes until they turn golden brown.
  5. Add the tomato paste, chili sauce, cumin, salt, pepper and herbs. Mix and cook for 2 minutes. The filling is now ready. Set it aside.
  6. Slit the hotdog buns down the middle lengthwise.
  7. Heat butter in another pan and slightly toast the hotdog buns on both sides over low heat. Once toasted, remove to a plate.
  8. Divide the filling into 4 portions and insert a portion into the slits you made on the hotdog buns.
  9. Top the hot dogs with chilli sauce, mustard and green onions. We used a squeeze bottle for the sauces to get a zig zag pattern.
