Baked BBQ Chicken Drumsticks

 

Barbequing is a great outdoor experience and meats cooked on open fire come with that unrivaled smokey flavour.

Although you can definitely use this recipe in your next BBQ event, it is especially designed for those times when you crave the outdoor BBQ taste but all you have is an oven.

In this recipe we’ve used Heinz Premium BBQ Sauce which we got from one of our partners Standard & Origin (S&O). Although we’ve dressed up the sauce with some additional spices and herbs a bit, we can assure you that it doesn’t really need any of it as it actually tastes pretty great on itself. It also gave our drumsticks that very desired smoky feel too.

 

Serves: 3-4

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ tbsp. grated garlic (7 cloves)
  • 1 tsp. grated ginger
  • 1 ½ tsp. mixed dried herbs
  • 1 ¼ tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1 tbsp. corn flour
  • 1/3 cup + 2 tbsp. Heinz Premium BBQ Sauce
  • 900g chicken drumsticks (skin on)

 

Instructions:

  1. Add garlic, ginger, dried mixed herbs, salt, chili powder, honey and corn flour to a mixing bowl and mix to combine. Add 1/3 cup BBQ sauce and combine again until well mixed.
  2. Score every drumstick in 3 places and pat them dry with tissue paper.
  3. Add the drumsticks to a large bowl, and using your hands, rub the mixture from step 1 all over the drumsticks.
  4. Cover and refrigerate the drumsticks for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for at least 10 minutes.
  6. Line a roasting tin with aluminum foil and transfer the chicken drumsticks to it.
  7. Place the tray on the middle rack of the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Take the tray out of the oven, flip the drumsticks and put the tray back in the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes.
  9. Remove the tray from the oven and pour the pan juices into a small pot (it’s easier to do this if you remove the chicken drumsticks to a plate before attempting to pour the pan juices into the pot. Once you get the juices into the pot, arrange the drumsticks inside the tray again. Also remember to be careful as the tray is going to be hot).
  10. Add 2 tbsp. BBQ sauce to the pot, mix to combine. Cook on high heat for about 4 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  11. While the sauce is cooking, preheat the oven at 230 degrees Celsius.
  12. Then brush the chicken drumsticks with the sauce on both sides and put the tray back in the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes at 230 degrees Celsius and that’s it. Use the leftover sauce as a dipping sauce for your baked BBQ chicken drumsticks.
