Street Snacks at Eat Street

If you’re in the mood for easy, snackable comfort food, then the offerings at Eat Street will certainly tick all the right boxes.

Their menu pulls together a mix of popular Asian street snacks – like Korean hotteok and egg bread, Japanese takoyaki and taiyaki, and with Malaysian kaya balls – offering plenty of both sweet and savoury options. They also do crepes with a range of both sweet and savoury fillings.

You can find their outlet in Hulhumale’ Phase 1 and if you’d rather stay in, they’re also available on Foodies. We chose the latter.

We went for their octopus takoyaki and cheese hotteok. If you’re unfamiliar with this, takoyaki are a type of ball-shaped flour dumplings, stuffed with a savoury filling, and topped with savoury sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, and bonito flakes (smoked tuna). Hotteok is a Korean pancake, usually with a sweet filling inside, although there are savoury versions as well. 

The takoyaki arrived golden and glossy, topped with the soy sauce, mayo, some seaweed and fluttering bonito flakes. Crisp on the outside and soft inside, each dumpling ball had that comforting, savoury flavour that makes takoyaki so easy to love. The octopus inside was tender, and the balance between the softness of the dough and the savoury toppings kept things from feeling too heavy.

The cheese hotteok was just as satisfying; warm, slightly crisp on the edges, and filled with gooey, melty cheese. The dough had a gentle chew, and the cheese paired surprisingly well with the sweetness of the pancake, although we do wish that the cheese was just a bit saltier!

All in all, the snacks were simple, comforting, and hearty – perfect to have during rainy day weather. We know that we’ll definitely be coming back for more!
