Finding some of our favourite foods that we enjoyed from abroad after coming back home to Male’ is sometimes a little bit tricky. One of our such favourites is mango sticky rice. So, when we found out that Sticky Desserts sells home-made mango sticky rice, we knew we had to try it out!
Mango sticky rice – as the name itself indicates – is a dessert made with glutinous rice and mangoes. The glutinous rice is mixed with coconut milk and palm sugar (or even jaggery) and cooked to make the “sticky” rice component, which is then served with fresh, ripe mangoes and sweetened coconut milk – the perfect, refreshing dessert!
Although we know mango sticky rice as a classic Thai dessert, versions of it are found across the cuisines of other South Asian countries as well, including Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, and Vietnam.
Now, back to our dish. Sticky Desserts’ “sticky” rice was perfectly balanced – not too sweet, and the rice had a nice bite to it. The coconut milk was super creamy and sweet. The mangoes – Maldivian mangoes, always the best! – portion was abundant. There was enough to go around so that each bite could have all three components, which is what makes this dish a true star!
Sticky Desserts’ mango sticky rice comes in three sizes – small, regular, and large. We opted for the regular pack, and 3 of us were able to enjoy it for dessert. But if you want a smaller pack just for yourself or a bigger pack to share with your people, they’ve got you covered too!
