For our Love this Dish article this time, we tried out the chicken shawarma platter from Big Plate Maldives – the Sri Lankan franchise restaurant in the Maldives.
Big Plate serves authentic Arabic, Indian and Sri Lankan food, with many fan favourites like shawarma, dolphin kottu roshi, Sri Lankan lamprais, and even burgers, submarines, and fried rice dishes. Other than dine-in and takeaway, they also deliver via Avas Food to both Male’ and Hulhumale’, which is the option that we went for!
The shawarma platter came complete with flour tortillas, the shredded shawarma chicken from the spit as well as French fries, veggies, pickled chillies, and sauces. And it was a big portion of food which can easily serve 2-3 people!
Now, for our tasting.
First up, the most important part – the chicken. It was juicy, tender and well-seasoned, pairing perfectly with the soft flour tortillas which were cut into (large) quarters, offering that signature shawarma taste in every bite.
The cut vegetables added a refreshing crunch, with coleslaw veggies, tomato, lettuce and onions each bringing their own texture. From this, the pickled chillies were the cherry on top – spicy and sour, to cut through the richness.
With all this, what really tied the whole platter together were the dips. The creamy mayo added a sweet smoothness, while the tangy tomato dip had hints of sweetness and acidity – perfect as both a spread on the base of the shawarma and as a dip.
Something that we really liked about this platter was that there was the option for you to make your shawarma the way you like; so, if you like more sauce or vegetables in your shawarma, then you can easily customise it to your preference.
Overall, having the shawarma platter from Big Plate was a satisfying experience, giving a delightful balance of flavour and freshness – great for a laid-back dinner or when you have people over!
