Mexican Food at Medmex Bistro

Mexican food is now pretty well-known in the Maldives; classics such as tacos, quesadillas, nachos, and churros are greatly loved by many. Plus, it’s always comforting and packs a tonne of flavour!

This time, we tried out Medmex Bistro on Roashanee Magu, on the lane just in front of King Salman Mosque, known for their Mexican dishes and Spanish tapas.

The restaurant is cosy and colourful with both outdoor and indoor seating and some interesting décor pieces. The vibrant tone of the space is welcoming, and it somehow always seems to be filled with people.

We decided to sit indoors. The service was fast, and the menu was easy to order from with descriptions of different foods available. We opted to go with the beef enchiladas and chicken gorditas along with churros for dessert and a classic mojito – all Mexican favourites.

The food arrived pretty quickly, and we were ready to feast!

Starting off with the chicken gorditas. Generously filled with shredded chicken, cheese, salsa and hot sauce, each bite of these grilled tortilla pockets was like a spicy, savoury bomb in your mouth. And the perfect start to the meal!

The enchilada portion was big and great for two people to share, especially if you’re going with another side or main dish.

The shredded Mexican beef was tender and flavourful, and the melted cheese pull on it was just mouth-watering. Also, the enchilada sauce didn’t overpower the other components of the dish, which we really liked. The rice on the side was fluffy, and although it might SEEM like it’s a lot less than you’d want – the portion works great with the rest of the meaty, cheesy dish.

The churros were probably our favourite! Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and filled with chocolate, they were the perfect balance of cinnamon sugar goodness and chocolatiness. We also got MORE chocolate as a dipping sauce, along with a coffee sauce – sweet and slightly bitter – which set off against the crunchy sweetness of the churros perfectly.

The classic mojito was minty and refreshing, which was great to cut through the richness of the rest of the dishes and sip throughout the meal.

Overall, the dining experience at Medmex Bistro was lovely and we’ll definitely be coming back to try more of their menu.
