Here we are featuring another yummy number on our Love This Dish series, and this time we are talking about Mamak’s Chilli Kotthu.
We had it delivered and pleasantly for us, it arrived warm.
The first thing we noticed, as soon as we dug in, was that it had some crispy bits in there. We loved that. It wasn’t dry either and we liked that too.
It is called Chilli Kotthu, and as you might expect, it is spicy. Some of us gave it a 7 out of 10 on a heat scale while some went as high as 8.5.
The whole thing had a lovely umami flavour and we thought we tasted some shrimp paste in there. It had a slight sweetness too, something tomatoey, reminiscent of butter chicken.
There were bits of dried red chillies, some tomatoes, carrots and onions too, and all this, together with the fried egg and the poppadum it came with, gave it a nice texture. A lot of the time kotthu can get monotonous after a few bites, but not this one.
We really do recommend this kotthu, especially if you like things spicy and won’t mind the hint of sweetness.
A single portion of Chili Kotthu costs MVR 85 and we have to say it’s quite large. Family and group sizes are also available. We hope you give it a go if you haven’t already.
