If you’re looking for a nice lunch spot with great service and delicious food, then look no further than K Café.
Located on Haveeree Hingun, right in front of Schwack Cinema Male’, K Café offers a range of delicious Sri Lankan and Asian options such as nasi lemak, nasi goreng, egg hoppers, Sri Lankan lamprais, the famous Jaffna prawn curry and more. They also have some great Asian desserts like Sri Lankan watalappan (coconut custard pudding) and Malay-Indo pisang goreng (fried banana fritters) as well as a wide range of drinks and other mains.
At lunch time, the space is packed, mainly with corporate lunch goers. During this time, they offer Power Hour Lunch Specials from 12:00 – 2:30 PM, with options like lamprais and rice served with a side of your choice and condiments – easy for those who just want something quick and filling.
However, as we had some time, we chose to go with their nasi lemak and nasi goreng with seafood satay.
Starting with the K Café nasi lemak. It came with a huge portion of rice along with a big piece of chicken rendang (spiced curry chicken), a calamari side and the traditional accompaniments of hardboiled egg, fried sprats, toasted peanuts, and sliced cucumbers.
The chicken rendang was tender and well-marinated with a deep, aromatic flavour. The coconut milk-infused, slightly sticky rice was the perfect base to it and balanced out the spicy and slightly sweet sambal sauces of the chicken and the calamari. The soft, mild rice and the curried sides went great with the textures of the crispy, slightly spicy fried sprats and crunchy peanuts for a well-rounded meal.
With traditional Indonesian flavours, the nasi goreng had a comforting, home-cooked quality to it. The portion size was large, and the rice was well-cooked with savoury, umami flavours. The prawn satay had a sweet and spicy glaze on it which was absolutely delicious. Served with a fried egg on top and a small veggie coleslaw on the side, the nasi goreng was hearty and satisfying.
To wash down the tasty but carb-loaded lunch, we went with a small macchiato at the end of the meal; while most places serve slightly large macchiatos, this was the perfect shot of espresso and small foamed milk for those who want a small, pick-me-up coffee but with milk!
Overall, K Café brings authentic, flavourful dishes that hit all the right notes, especially for lunch. It's certainly a spot we’ll go again to try more of their offerings.
